Mike Smith rode his first winner at Santa Fe Downs in 1982. He came from a racing family; his father rode and his uncle trained. Mike began riding in the bush leagues by age 11 and took out a license at age 16. Through 2002 he had won with 17% of all his mounts and 19% of his stakes graded mounts. Smith has been a leading rider on both coasts. Until 2001 he was primarily associated with racing in the east. Among his most dramatic races were front-running victories in the Travers, in which he pushed Holy Bull and Coronado’s Quest to win against strong fields. He won the 1993 Preakness with Prairie Bayou and was in the winner’s circle for 10 of his 48 Breeders’ Cup races, including the 1997 Classic with Skip Away. In 1998 Smith’s career was briefly interrupted by two traumatic spills. In March he broke his shoulder and collarbone and was out for three months. By August he was the leading rider at the Saratoga meet when another accident broke two vertebrae and kept him out of the saddle for six months. In 2000 Smith moved his tack to California and began to make inroads on the west coast circuit. In 2002 Smith had another banner year. He was the regular rider for Horse of the Year Azeri, winning the Breeders’ Cup Distaff and taking the Juvenile with Vindication. Other important mounts in his career have included Lure, Unbridled’s Song, Inside Information, Paradise Creek, Devil His Due, and Heavenly Prize. In 1993 Smith set an all-time record in stakes wins with 62 victories and was the nation’s leading money-winner with earnings over $14 million. The following year he broke his stakes record with 68 victories and earned his second consecutive Eclipse Award. Mike Smith was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.
