The Czech Republic lost Wednesday night’s Olympic hockey game against Finland, despite Jaromir Jagr’s return from injury. During Tuesday night’s overtime win by the Czechs over Latvia, Jagr left the game early in the second period with an upper-body injury. This was most likely a result of a hard hit that Jagr received from Russia’s Alex Ovechkin on Sunday.
Despite Jagr’s questionable status for Wednesday night’s quarterfinal game, he did play. However, this was not enough, as Jagr was held scoreless and the Czechs fell to Finland 2-0. Finland will now play the United States in the semifinals.

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin was recently arrested on DUI and speeding charges. Khabibulin was pulled over by police on February 8th after his Ferrari was seen traveling 70 mph in a 45 mph zone in Scottsdale, Arizona. Shortly thereafter, Khabibulin was arrested after he took a field sobriety test. Last month, this Olympic Gold medalist had surgery to repair a hurniated disk that had kept him from playing since November.

Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins announced that he will be heading to the Winter Olympic tournament despite having been hit in the foot by a hockey puck recently. In the last game before the NHL Olympic break, Crosby blocked a slap shot with what he says was his foot. He appeared to be testing his foot shortly after the play, but by the end of the game he did not appear to be hindered at all. At the age of 22, Crosby is the holder of numerous records, including being the youngest player in NHL history to record 100 points in a season, the youngest to be voted to the NHL All-Star Game, and the youngest captain to win the Stanley Cup. He is one of three alternate captains for this Winter Olympics’ Team Canada, which was scheduled to practice today and play against Norway tomorrow.

Alex Ovechkin decided to test his injured right knee this morning. He skated for less than five minutes when he discovered he was unable to move at full speed. At this point the Capitals are considering when Ovechkin will play on a day by day basis.
The absence of Alex Ovechkin is a great loss to the team. He leads the Capitals with 18 goals, 30 points and 44 penalty minutes.
Ovechkin was injured yesterday in a knee-on-knee hit against the Carolina Hurricanes. The actual collision took place with Tim Gleason. We hope Alex Ovechkin has a speedy and full recovery.
