One of the best defensive players in the NFL, Brian Urlacher has won a number of awards that attest to his greatness both as a defender and as an overall player. By being named the Associated Press (AP) NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2000 and the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2005, Urlacher became only the fifth player in NFL to have won both awards; he also became only the 2nd member ever of the Chicago Bears to win the latter award. From 2000 to 2006, he was selected to the Pro Bowl 6 times; by 2003, he had already become the fifth player in franchise history to receive a Pro Bowl selection in each of his first 4 NFL seasons. Urlacher is now a 4-time All-Pro selection, a Football Digest Defensive Player of the Year, and a member of the NFL 2000’s All-Decade Team, which featured such other modern-day NFL greats as Randy Moss, Tom Brady, and LaDainian Tomlinson. Some have called Urlacher overrated, but if his past honors are any indication of his true talent, then it is hard to argue that Urlacher is one of the best players in the NFL today. At the very least, he is one of the most cherished players in Bears franchise history.
